But in taking on the print versions of those follow-ups, plotted by other people, Morrell had a specific agenda. First Blood, written a decade before the Stallone adaptation made Rambo a household name, remains largely a separate entity, even to Morrell’s own sequels. This is all the attention David Morrell gives to the continuity problem of continuing a series of novels where the protagonist didn’t survive the first installment. He relaxes just long enough to let Ward move closer and then he lashes out and fights his way out of the station.Alamo Drafthouse's Rambo marathon leading up to Rambo: Last Blood is almost here. Add to all that the fact that Galt ordered the officer with the straight razor, Ward, to shave Rambo without shaving cream or soap suds or even plain water and you have a situation where Rambo could've been severely cut or slashed, especially being held in a chokehold and struggling. One trivia note: the prosthetic scars that were put on Stallone's back for the scene kept flying off when he was sprayed, even at low pressure. A fire hose is meant to spray water at high pressure, which would be very painful.

Also, in the scenes just prior to the shave, he was assaulted by Galt with a nightstick and sprayed with cold water from a fire hose. When Ward approaches him with the straight razor, Rambo is thrown instantly back to Vietnam and his torture and fought viciously to defend himself. His violent reaction is due to PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), one of the flashbacks he has is of being tied up crucifixion-style and being slashed across the chest with a large knife during his time in Vietnam. Soon, the town becomes a war zone as Rambo sets out to get his revenge on Teasle, resulting in a violent confrontation. However, The National Guard, the State police, and Rambo's former commanding officer Colonel Sam Trautman ( Richard Crenna) arrive to help in the manhunt and to plead with Rambo to stop the violence. Hunted by Teasle and his deputies, Rambo uses his combat skill to overpower Teasle's deputies and warn Teasle to leave him alone.

Rambo escapes from the police station and flees into the woods. Due to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Rambo relives painful memories of being tortured in a prison camp during the Vietnam war and suffers abuse and mistreatment by the cruel Deputy Arthur Galt ( Jack Starrett). Disillusioned Vietnam veteran and Green Beret with a Congressional Medal of Honor, John Rambo ( Sylvester Stallone) walks into the small town of Hope, Washington to get food at a diner and is arrested by town sheriff Will Teasle ( Brian Dennehy) for being a drifter and a troublemaker.
